How do I run a Traceroute?
If you're experiencing network issues, our support team may ask you to run a traceroute. A traceroute helps identify the path your network traffic takes and where any delays or failures are happening. Below are steps to run a traceroute on both Windows and macOS.
Open the Command Prompt:
Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog.
Type cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
Run the Traceroute:
In the Command Prompt, type the following command tracert followed by your domain and press Enter, eg:
Wait for Results:
The traceroute will show a list of hops between your computer and the destination. This process may take a few moments to complete.
Copy the Results:
Right-click inside the Command Prompt window and select Mark.
Highlight the traceroute results and press Enter to copy.
Paste the results into a text file or email to share with support.
Open Terminal:
Click the Spotlight icon (the magnifying glass) in the top-right corner of your screen, or press Command + Space to open Spotlight Search.
Type Terminal and press Enter.
Run the Traceroute:
In the Terminal window, type the command traceroute followed by your domain and press Enter, eg:
Wait for Results:
The traceroute will begin and show a list of hops between your Mac and the destination. This process may take a few moments to complete.
Copy the Results:
Highlight the results in the Terminal window, right-click, and select Copy.
Paste the results into a text file or email to share with support.
