My website is displaying a 403 error. How do I fix it?

A 403 Forbidden error occurs when your web server understands the request but refuses to authorise it. This error can arise from various issues, including incorrect file permissions and security blocks.

Common Causes of a 403 Errors:

Incorrect File Permissions:

To ensure that users can access your website, the correct file permissions must be set. Typically, this is handled automatically during file uploads. However, if you've been manually adjusting permissions, it's possible that some settings may be incorrect. File permissions should be set to 0644 and folders to 0755.

mod_security / Imunify360 Blocking Access:

If you recently added new scripts, modules, or plugins, it's possible that mod_security or Imunify360 has blocked access to your page due to a rule violation. Although this occurrence is rare, it can happen. If you encounter repeated 403 Forbidden errors and then find yourself unable to connect, it's likely that ModSecurity / Imunify360 has logged events leading to a temporary block of your IP address.

In such cases, please contact our support team with the following details:

The URL you were trying to access.
The time the events occurred.
Your public IP address (you can find this by visiting Show IP).

You can reach us by submitting a support ticket or by emailing us at helpdesk@elitehost.co.za.

Our team will investigate the logs and help you resolve the issue.
