What does "AutoSSL reduced SSL coverage" mean?

AutoSSL is a feature in cPanel that automatically secures your website with SSL certificates, ensuring encrypted connections for visitors. Occasionally, you may receive a notification indicating “reduced SSL coverage.” This message can be confusing due to the technical language it contains.

What does "reduced SSL coverage" mean?

This notification indicates that AutoSSL was unable to renew the SSL certificate for one or more of your domains or subdomains.

This typically occurs when a domain or subdomain points to an external provider (e.g., Wix, Cloudflare, Squarespace). AutoSSL may still try to issue an SSL certificate for these domains/subdomains, but since they aren’t pointed to our servers, the domain control validation (DCV) fails, resulting in the "reduced coverage" notification.

How can I fix this?

To resolve this, you can choose to either disable AutoSSL notifications or exclude the specific domains or subdomains from AutoSSL attempts:

Disable AutoSSL Notifications:

If SSL coverage isn’t required for services managed outside of your hosting account, you can disable these notifications to stop receiving alerts:

Log in to cPanel.
Go to Contact Information.
Locate AutoSSL Notifications and disable notifications for AutoSSL events.
Click Save.

Exclude the Domain from AutoSSL:

Alternatively, if you'd prefer to exclude the domain or subdomain from AutoSSL attempts:

Log in to cPanel.
Navigate to SSL/TLS Status.
Find any entries with the message "An error occurred the last time AutoSSL ran," and select Exclude from AutoSSL for those entries.
