How do I set up my email account in Mozilla Thunderbird?

This guide walks you through the steps to set up an email account in Mozilla Thunderbird using the IMAP protocol. To set up your email account in Mozilla Thunderbird, follow these steps:

Open Thunderbird
Launch Mozilla Thunderbird on your computer.

Add a New Email Account
Click on the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner.
Select Account Settings from the dropdown.
Click on Account Actions and select Add Mail Account.

Enter Your Information
Your name: Enter your full name as you want it displayed.
Email address: Enter your full email address (e.g., user@exampledomain.co.za).
Password: Enter the password for your email account.
Click Continue.

Thunderbird Auto-Detects Settings
Thunderbird will attempt to automatically detect your email settings. However, it's likely that not all settings will be correct, so you’ll need to adjust them manually.

Manual Configuration
Click Manual config to check all the settings.

Change the SSL setting for both Incoming and Outgoing to SSL/TLS. This will automatically change the port numbers to 993 for Incoming and 465 for Outgoing.
In the Incoming Username field, enter your full email address (e.g., user@exampledomain.co.za). It will automatically update in the Outgoing field.

Re-Test and Confirm
Click Re-Test to verify the settings. After the settings have been checked and confirmed, click Done to complete the setup.

Once the account is set up, you can send and receive emails using Thunderbird. The IMAP protocol ensures that your emails are synchronised across multiple devices.

Make sure the email address is already created in your hosting account via cPanel before attempting to set it up in Mozilla Thunderbird.
If you experience any issues with sending or receiving emails, verify that the server details (mail server and credentials) are correct.
You can test your mailbox credentials by logging into webmail, refer to the article: How do I access webmail?
